My Story: From Redundancy to Running My Own Business

 

If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd be running my own successful events business, and teaching other people how to do the same, I probably wouldn't have believed you.

 

I spent 12 years working in the construction industry, thinking I had a secure career for life. Then COVID hit, and I was made redundant.

Suddenly, I had a big decision to make. I could look for another job and carry on as before, or I could take a chance on myself.

 

I chose to take the chance. I used my redundancy money to buy an old Transit van and one flower wall, and I started advertising my services.

I didn't have years of business experience. I didn't have a huge warehouse full of equipment or a big team behind me. I learnt as I went.

Thankfully, my dad runs his own SEO business, and he helped me get my website and online presence off the ground.

From there, I kept learning, taking bookings, reinvesting in the business and slowly building my reputation.

 

What started with one van and one flower wall grew into Emerald Events Hire, my full-time career.

And the biggest thing I've gained isn't just a business. It's freedom.

I no longer have to ask a manager for annual leave or count how many holiday days I've got left. I choose when I work, take time off when I want to, and build my business around the life I want.

 

That's why I created Emerald Events Academy.

I know what it's like to sit there thinking, "I'd love to do something different, but I don't know where to start." I also know you don't need years of experience, a huge investment or a perfect business plan to get going.

We'll cover the essential foundations of running your own events décor business, including:

• Insurance, equipment and storage
• Choosing your suppliers
• Setting up as self-employed or a limited company
• Building a website
• Marketing yourself and getting noticed on social media

 

The hands-on side​

Then it's time to get creative! You'll learn the practical skills behind:

• Balloon garlands, including how to inflate, size and assemble balloons properly
• Shimmer walls and flower walls, including the stands, weights and safe set-up
• Styling your décor so it looks professional at every event
